Super Second Day

Our second day of school was just as great as the first!  We read a wonderful story about a girl named Chrysanthemum who learned to love her name.  We also had a discussion about how to be kind to our classmates.

Mr. Kriger, our new guidance counselor, visited our room to introduce himself and we told him our names and something about ourself.

We made raccoon paper bag puppets and learned a poem about raccoons.  We were able to practice coloring, cutting, glueing and reading.  We have very talented first graders in our class!

We also celebrated our very first birthday in our room.  Happy birthday to Gabby!

First Day

Whew!  It was a whirlwind of a first day!  We had an *awesome* time together today.  I am so impressed with all of your children and how ready they are for school.

We had Morning Meeting on the Smartboard which the first graders LOVED!  We also had library and pizza for lunch.  Tomorrow we will have P.E.  Please remember sneakers!  We also shared a little bit about ourselves.

Please return all forms as soon as possible too.

It's going to be a great year!

Ask your child about our Super Student chart and how it works.  They learned about it today for the first time and are VERY excited to see it in action!

If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me!

Open House and Lunch Changes

It was great to meet so many of you at Open House this morning.  If you didn't make it or you didn't have a chance while you were visiting, please use the link below to sign your child up for breakfast and/or lunch this week.

This year, we will do all of our ordering online.  Even if your child brings a snack and lunch every day- please choose that option on the form.

Please let me know if you have any questions!

Thanks!

Welcome to a New School Year

Dear Families,

Welcome to a new school year!  The beginning of the year can be overwhelming with so many new routines and paperwork to fill out. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns, or I can be of any help at all.

Homework
Every day Monday-Thursday the student’s homework folder will go home.  Homework will not start for the first couple weeks of school but I would like to get the students into the routine of bringing it to and from home to school so we will start the folders on the very first day.  Homework in 1st grade should not exceed 10 minutes total.  If you find that homework is taking longer than that, please stop after 10 minutes and let me know.  These folders can be used for notes anytime as well.

Positive Behavior
School-wide we are still participating in the PBIS behavior management system.  Students will be earning “warm-fuzzies” for demonstrating behavior that is expected.  In our classroom we have two positive-behavior recognition systems.  The first is a chart hanging in our room:
Super Student
Role Model
Excellent Effort
Ready to Learn
Make Better Choices
Teacher’s Choice
Parent Contact
Students start every day on the green “Ready to Learn” section.  As the day progresses, their clips will be moved up or down depending on their behavior.  They will fill out a worksheet at the end of the day letting you know what section they finished the day on and how they’re feeling overall about their day at school.

Communication
It is my goal to “go paperless” this year in terms of communication.  We have a classroom blog you can find at www.ppsfirstgrade.blogspot.com (if you enter your email address on the right-hand side of the page you will be notified whenever we’ve posted new material!)           Please remember to return your child’s photo policy so I know if it is possible to post photos of your child on our blog.  Children will never be in a photo by themselves and will be identified only by their initials.

I am thrilled to be teaching at Porter’s Point this year and am looking forward to a great year will all of your children.

Please send me an email as soon as possible so we can be sure to have the right contact information from the beginning of school!
