We were building and finding words today like crazy!  We used Word Builder, Word Bingo and magnetic letters during literacy.  We enjoyed learning about new apps on the ipads.

The Day the Crayons Quit

We are learning about voice and perspective in our writing and reading and have been having discussions about who is the person/animal/thing doing the talking in stories that we read.  We've also been discussing how that impacts what is being said.  To show the first graders an example of perspective today, we read, The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt.  The students loved this story and could relate personally to it as they agreed, they have some crayons they use more than others!

We are continuing our study of Magic-e in SWR by watching a few fun videos about the strength and power of Magic-e.  You can check them out below!

Publishing Writing

We are working this week to publish stories we have written.  We are using one of our favorite apps, Haiku Deck to do this. We chose our favorite piece of writing today and created a Haiku Deck.  We will continue to add pages each day this week.  We enjoy selecting pictures to match our words the most.

We are reviewing all of our letters, word families and red words in SWR.  We will have a SWR test mid-week.  Please use the SWR test example I sent home to practice for the test.

If you finish getting Valentine's done before our celebration on Friday, please feel free to send them in with your child.  We will keep them in a safe place in our room until Friday morning.  Parents are welcome to join us if you'd like for the celebration.

Centimeters

We learned all about centimeters in math today.  We remembered that we have learned about inches and how to measure them, so learning a new unit of measurement was exciting!  We did a fabulous job practicing to measure in centimeters, but we do have to remember to start at the beginning of the ruler or tape measure.  Oftentimes, we started to measure after the metal tab so we were just 1 centimeter off!  Practice measuring items at home in feet, inches and centimeters!

A few reminders:
-tomorrow is the 100th day of school!  We're so excited and will be celebrating many ways!
-please sign up for lunch for next week using the link from the homepage.
-we are working to collect canned chicken and tuna for the Colchester Food Shelf.  Any donation you can send in will be very much appreciated!

Math Facts

We are learning all about strategies to help us with fast math facts.  Today, we used our addition/subtraction table to solve subtraction problems for the first time.  We used addition facts to help us find the missing number in subtraction facts.  We also continued our beat the calculator games from last week.  Two of our first graders have graduated from Xtramath!  Wow!
