Opinions!

We have been writing opinion pieces for a couple of weeks.  This week, we learned how to use a graphic organizer to help us plan our writing.  We have written some very impressive pieces.  Today, we'd like to share some with you!

Jayden Writes:

I like Minecraft.  I like it because you can get armor.  I like it because it is a game.  I like Minecraft.  Do you?

Mathieau Writes:

I love basketball.  You shoot hoops and score points.  There are half-times.  Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.  You should try it!

Lucy Writes:
I love my friends and family.  They are kind and they are caring.  Another reason is they are silly, fun and nice.  I like my friends and family.  Do you?

What a Week!

Wow!  What a week we've had!  I cannot believe the amount of hard work and cooperation we've had in our classroom.  We are loving our new app, Classroom Dojo!  Please be on the lookout for an informational paper in your child's folder tomorrow with more information about Classroom Dojo and how you can access it from home.

We have added new items to our conventions of non-fiction notebooks and have been investigating non-fiction books to see what features we notice.

In other news, we had two students who were sent to the principal's office today...

FOR SOMETHING REALLY GOOD!  Congratulations to Sarah and Amaal for their hard work.

Class Dojo

We started using a new class app/website today called Class Dojo.  We had A LOT of fun with it so far and can't wait to tell you more about it soon!  In the meantime, ask your first grader to tell you more about it this afternoon!

We are continuing to learn about features on non-fiction texts in literacy.  These first graders were hard at work updating their conventions notebooks today.

Using Photographs to Learn

Today we started a new reading unit about non-fiction text features.  We learned today that we can use photographs to learn more information about what we are reading.  We read through non-fiction books and found examples of this.  When we found a great example, we recorded it in our conventions of non-fiction workbook.  Check out the first graders hard at work:

A Day of Celebration

Tomorrow, Friday, is our Day of Celebration!  We have been working hard to be safe, respectful and ready to learn.  We have been earning SO many warm fuzzies, that we had to ask Mr. Kriger for an additional, larger bear!  We think we've set a record for the amount of warm-fuzzies one class has earned in a week.  We cannot wait to pour all of our fuzzies into the bin at school-wide morning meeting tomorrow.

Tomorrow will be a very special day.  Please send your child to school in pajamas and with their favorite (small) stuffed animal!  We have had a lot of conversations about pajamas and if they should be clean pajamas or straight-out-of-bed pajamas and we've decided that it's best to let our parents decide. :)

We are very anxious for tomorrow!

Wow! A Full Bear!

We accomplished something AMAZING on Friday- we filled up our warm-fuzzy bear in one day!  We were working so hard to be safe, respectful and ready to learn.  Our new friend, Dominic, was working exceptionally hard!  We're so glad to have him as an addition to our class, now we have ANOTHER first grader who is helping us fill our bear- we're so lucky!

We will celebrate filling our bear this Friday with a pajama/stuffed animal/movie morning.  The first graders know I can't stand stuffed animals, so they are really looking forward to bringing a small one to school for the day.

Today we reviewed Venn diagrams and compared and contrasted beaches we read about.  We also compared and constrasted other things in our notebooks.

We are beginning to learn about opinion writing in writing.  We had some very funny opinions to share today.

Kindness Counts

Here we are again, as a whole class!  (Except Brice and Emily, who are sadly not feeling well.)  Today we would like to tell you that we are participating in a Kindness Chain.  Nathan says, "A kindness chain is when you focus on helping other people and finding kindness.  We write them down and hang them up."

We have been looking for acts of kindness, and we have already found SO many!  Here is a sampling of acts of kindness we've seen so far:

Harley's friend returned her belongings.

Trinity noticed someone ask someone else if they were okay after they fell out of their seat.

Ariana noticed Charlie putting out chairs for his friends.

Fyn helped stack chairs for everyone.

Ariana helped Isabella with her computer.

Charlie noticed Eliana asking Colby if he was okay and she helped him back up.

Mrs. B. helped Elsie when she fell at recess.

Nathan helped Lucy when she fell and asked if she was okay.

We were very excited that Charlie's dad, left us a comment on our last post!  If you notice any acts of kindness at work or at home, let us know!

Welcome Back, Wednesday!

We are learning how to blog as a whole class.  Today's post, is extremely special because we are writing it as an entire class!  Here is what the first graders think is important about our first day back together!

Fyn would like us to know that he thinks it's going to be a great week!

Isabella thinks it is important to let you know, and I agree because it was VERY surprising, that our toilet overflowed in the MIDDLE OF MATH!  We were sitting, quietly, working on counting coins and computers when water started pouring out of our bathroom.  YIKES!

Sarah says, we are so excited to welcome a new student to our classroom today.  Dominic is very special and we've already learned that he is a very good counter.

Emily would like you to know that we learned a new game in math called Coin Exchange!  Emily says, when you get 5 pennies, you should exchange for a nickel.  When you get two nickels, you should exchange for a dime.  When you have five nickels (or two dimes and a nickel) you can exchange for a quarter!  Feel free to play this game at home!

Amaal (and everyone!) would like to tell you that we started gymnastics in P.E.

What a day!
