Non-Fiction and Opinions

We are off to a great start this week!  We worked hard in literacy to learn about our new spelling pattern- r-blends.  We are working with words that start with cr____, gr_____, tr____, and dr____ this week! As you're reading with your first grader at home, keep track of how many words you can find that begin this way!

One reading group used the index of a book today, to find a topic they were interested in reading about.  They located the page, read about the topic, and shared with their group.

In writing, we practiced our speaking and listening skills by reading secret opinion prompts and coming up with reasons for them!  These are the prompts we responded to:
____ is the worst sport because ______
_____ is the worst smell because ________
______ is the best school because ________
_____ is the best dessert because ______
_____ is my favorite food because_______

We had a great time coming up with reasons and listening for reasons from the audience.

Our school-wide holiday sing-a-long is Friday, December 18th at 1:50pm.  If you plan to join us, please meet us in the cafeteria/gym at that time.

Double, Double

Today we learned all about doubles in math and how we can add doubles quickly.  We also learned a new game, Roll for Doubles, that we can keep track of with a bar graph!  It is so much fun when everything we're learning about works together.

We learned about cause and effect during literacy.  We read a literary non-fiction book The Disappearing Moon to learn about what caused certain things to happen.  Ask your first grader to tell you about literary non-fiction and cause and effect when they get home today.

We also practiced our blends and k, ke, ck endings.  Check out this chart the first graders made with words they found!

We are continuing to write about our opinions in writing.  We have MANY, MANY opinions to choose from! Today, we wrote about which animal we liked best, a cat or a lizard.

We also read our weekly Scholastic News magazine.  You can access Scholastic News at home:

Blends, and Explorations and Literary Non-Fiction

Oh, my!

We have been hard at work in first grade learning about so many things!

Today in math, we learned how to take a survey to collect data. We surveyed our classmates and also explored with shapes, measurement and value.

In literacy, we are learning about literary non-fiction which is a genre of book. These books look and sound like a story, but also have true information.  Today, we read The Disappearing Moon. In this book, we read about animals who thought the moon was disappearing and learned about the phases of the moon.  We made our own books showcasing phases of the moon when we were done reading.

We have been learning about "l" blend words.  First graders today read books from their book bins and books from our science station and recorded words with blends as they went.  They added words to our classroom chart!

The first graders are having a wonderful week and are working so hard to achieve success!
