Welcome to a New School Year

Dear Families,

Welcome to a new school year!  The beginning of the year can be overwhelming with so many new routines and paperwork to fill out. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns, or I can be of any help at all.

Homework
Every day Monday-Thursday the student’s homework folder will go home.  Homework will not start for the first couple weeks of school but I would like to get the students into the routine of bringing it to and from home to school so we will start the folders on the very first day.  Homework in 1st grade should not exceed 10 minutes total.  If you find that homework is taking longer than that, please stop after 10 minutes and let me know.  These folders can be used for notes anytime as well.

Positive Behavior
School-wide we are still participating in the PBIS behavior management system.  Students will be earning “warm-fuzzies” for demonstrating behavior that is expected.  In our classroom we have two positive-behavior recognition systems.  The first is a chart hanging in our room:
Super Student
Role Model
Excellent Effort
Ready to Learn
Make Better Choices
Teacher’s Choice
Parent Contact
Students start every day on the green “Ready to Learn” section.  As the day progresses, their clips will be moved up or down depending on their behavior.  They will fill out a worksheet at the end of the day letting you know what section they finished the day on and how they’re feeling overall about their day at school.

Communication
It is my goal to “go paperless” this year in terms of communication.  We have a classroom blog you can find at www.ppsfirstgrade.blogspot.com (if you enter your email address on the right-hand side of the page you will be notified whenever we’ve posted new material!)           Please remember to return your child’s photo policy so I know if it is possible to post photos of your child on our blog.  Children will never be in a photo by themselves and will be identified only by their initials.

I am thrilled to be teaching at Porter’s Point this year and am looking forward to a great year will all of your children.

You can reach me at:

Please send me an email as soon as possible so we can be sure to have the right contact information from the beginning of school!
