Subtraction Strategies and Speech Bubbles

Today we learned about the penny and cent(s) notation.  We practiced counting pennies and some of us counted pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters!  We also continued to label our pennies so we knew what we were talking about.

We've been working hard to have Fact Power and "just know" our math facts.  We are awesome! Check out this amazing first grader showing he can use his fingers to subtract:

We have been identifying the main idea and key details in things we read.  We've noticed that you can usually figure out the main idea just by looking and reading cover of a book or the title of an article.  We've been hunting for the key details by assessing what is most important in what we read.  We always make sure that it relates to the main idea.  We are super readers.

In writing, we've been adding speech bubbles to our characters to show what they are thinking or saying.  We couldn't believe how much more "real" our stories become when characters are thinking and talking.  Our stories are detailed and funny.  We have also been working to read our stories like published books.  This first grader is demonstrating how to read your work fluently, so it reads like a book.

And, as usual... we have some fabulous first graders having fun!
