Marvelous Monday

We got right to work this morning in room 12.  We were all rested from the weekend and ready to learn.  We can accomplish so much when we're all ready to learn!

Our WOW word this week is immense.  We practiced using this word in sentences.  Some of us even ate immense pieces of pizza this weekend.  The red word this week is see.  We were excited to learn about our first word family this year, the __at word family.  We couldn't believe once we could spell at, we could also spell cat, hat, fat, chat, that, and even flat, splat, drat and sat!  We thought of so many words in the __at word family.

We had explorations for the first time in math this year.  Explorations is when we explore math materials on our own.  Today we explored geo-boards, base 10 blocks, and pattern blocks.  We had a lot of time to use the materials and were able to create some impressive things.  During this time we also practiced our fast math skills with xtramath and even came to the strategy table in small groups to learn about subtration strategies.  Today's strategy was to use manipulatives to model taking away.  Ask your first grader to show you how they take away using manipulatives.

In literacy our I can statement was, "I can reread and touch each word."  This is important because when we make a mistake it helps us find it when we touch the words.  We practiced this with books from our book boxes and even worked on a special project.

In writing we continued to work on our stories and spell tough words by stretching them out.

Thursday is Open House.  We will see you at 6:30 if you're able to make it!
